She represented Venezuela and eventually won the Miss Universe 2008 title in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Before her crowning, she worked as model under the Elite Model Management and competed in 2001's Elite Model Look International. As a professional model, she has done modelling jobs with a lot of well-known designer brands such as Versace, Roberto Cavalli and Max Mara to name a few. The second time for Japan to capture the title since Akiko Kojima won it the first time 48 years before in 1959. She got the highest score in the swimsuit competition and placed 4th in the evening gown. The most impressive part was when she answered the question from Nina Garcia about the lessons she has learned as a child that still affects her life. Riyo told the crowd that ever since she's a child she's been dancing and was constantly surrounded by students and teachers. As a result, she learned to always become joyful, patient, and positive in her outlook in life.
