Miss Universe 2009 – Stefanía Fernández - Venezuela Background
Stefanía Fernández became Miss Venezuela 2008 on September 10, 2008 in Caracas. This allowed her to represent Venezuela and eventually won the Miss Universe crown of 2009. This 5'10½" beauty is of Spanish and Ukrainian descent. Her father is from Galicia, Spain while her mother's Ukrainian father immigrated to Venezuela from Soviet Union. Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela of the previous year crowned her both as Miss Venezuela 2008 and Miss Universe 2009.
This made history as the first time in a country to win successively in the Miss Universe. It earned a Guinness world of record as the first Miss Universe crowned by a fellow citizen. Since her crowning, Stefanía has traveled to more than half a dozen countries promoting awareness to AIDS and other significant humanitarian causes. She is expected to crown the next Miss Universe 2010.
Miss Venezuele 2007, Dayana Sabrina Mendoza was born on June 1, 1986 in Caracas, Venezuela. She represented Venezuela and eventually won the Miss Universe 2008 title in Nha Trang, Vietnam.
Before her crowning, she worked as model under the Elite Model Management and competed in 2001's Elite Model Look International. As a professional model, she has done modelling jobs with a lot of well-known designer brands such as Versace, Roberto Cavalli and Max Mara to name a few. Through these jobs, she travelled to several of the world's famous capitals like New York, Paris, Milan and many others. Winning the crown in 2008, made her the first woman from Venezuela to be crowned Miss Universe in the 21st century. Through her works as an ambassador for Miss Universe, Dayana has travelled to many countries in Europe, Asia, The Americas and the Middle East promoting various humanitarian causes. She stated that she loves photography, design and advertising as well as playing with the waves through surfing.
The Japanese dance instructor Riyo Mori won the Miss Universe crown of 2007 in Mexico City. The second time for Japan to capture the title since Akiko Kojima won it the first time 48 years before in 1959. She got the highest score in the swimsuit competition and placed 4th in the evening gown. The most impressive part was when she answered the question from Nina Garcia about the lessons she has learned as a child that still affects her life. Riyo told the crowd that ever since she's a child she's been dancing and was constantly surrounded by students and teachers. As a result, she learned to always become joyful, patient, and positive in her outlook in life. She also hoped that one day; she'll be able to impart these principles to the next generation of children.
Riyo is the 11th Asian woman to win Miss Universe since Lara Dutta of India was crowned in 2000. She is passionate for humanitarian causes proclaiming "I think I have a samurai soul, I'm very patient, and I can serve others." As of December 2007, Riyo has traveled the different parts of the world as a goodwill ambassador. She has also expressed her desire to one day open a multicultural dance school in Japan.
Margaret Gardiner of Woodstock, South Africa in 1978 won the first ever Miss Universe crown for South Africa and the African continent. At 18 years old, she won the hearts of many when she answered "I am willing to marry any man that I love," when asked if she would agree to marry a man of native African descent. She was crowned in Acapulco, Mexico by Janelle Commissiong, the first black woman to ever win in the Miss Universe. She is married to a UCLA professor, Andre Nel and now works as a journalist in Los Angeles, California.
Maria Margarita Moran from the Philippines in 1973 won the Miss Universe crown in Athens, Greece. It was the first time that the Miss Universe pageant was held outside of United States territory, truly becoming international. Margie Moran as she is widely known in the Philippines is a granddaughter of one of the Philippine presidents, Manuel Roxas.
Prior to joining the Miss Universe, Margie was a full-time university student and part-time model. She joined the Miss Philippines due to the continuous urgings of her family and friends. She won and represented the Philippines eventually becoming the second Miss Universe after Gloria Diaz's first win in 1969. An early favorite in the competition, 19-year-old Filipina beauty was also chosen Miss Photogenic. Sometime after her reign, she married Antonio "Tony Boy" Floirendo, a legislator. She currently resides in Davao, Philippines managing the "Pearl Farm" a popular resort in Samal Island.
